Alright guys heres my worst weekend sledding in a nut shell,
Well we roll into fernie evening of the 21st to a awesome cabin on the mountain at fernie. Well with all the rain in the 2 days prior to us going they lost 30" of snow... in 48 hours. unfreakin real. Saturday morning we get our avalanche beacons (why we ever thought we would need them was beyond me) anyhow we talk to the crew down at the cat dealer ship find an area that might have some snow left, we drove around a mountain or two.. looking for the area these guys were talking about got frustrated/sort of lost and headed back to the cabin. We were all tired and rather grumpy as the days events of driving around mountains was not joyfull. We dropped off the beacons that evening and talk to them again to find out that we took 2 wrong turns due to poor navagation/directions 2 more bridges than stated in the original directions. Anyhow we drove right to the spot and said we'd ride hard sunday (today) headed back to the cabin and partied the night away in the hot tub and what not.
Sunday morning we head out, into a raining fog. To think we were riding for more than 10km's on rode with 2" of shear ice on it, clinging to the ditches and what snow that was in those ditches still makes me shutter. Finally made it to the snow with the dense fog and rode for 3 hours... in total costing me 125$ per hour to ride for 3 hours. Pack up, pick up the snowboarders off the grass hill at the fernie alpine resort and head back.
So now i'm fine shitty ride, shitty weather but awesome cabin and a good crew of people to party it up with. But... theres always the 'but' i just got back from the "lessor" as stated on the legal documents that i signed prior to renting the sled, and i was notified of upwards of $3500 in damages to the sled that i only rode for 3 hours. It could be as little as $1000 but have to wait till he gets his 'guy' to look at it. As for any one interested i took out the tunnel right behind the belly pan which is also bent and the main a-arm support for the suspention setup. its all aluminium.
Anyhow that was my rant for my 'could be' $4500 week of shitty sledding.
As to clearifiy why its better to own than rent, now i have to deal with some guy that i don't like some parts that i'll never see, and $3500 that i would pefer to go into something that i own and can use after its fixed.
... my first taste of how expensive this hobby can really be...
Alright, have some great news, the wallet can have a peace full sleep tonight knowing its still only 3 digits and i don't need to buy some rental sled.
He called me this evening to let me know that he can straighten the tunnel and just has to replace one pan under neithe, the bill that could've been gross is now only $655,
Jeff

Hey Jeff,
Hopefully your next weekend will be a better ride. Speaking of riding costs. Someone figured out their cost of ownership, and it went like this. 9000 for the sled, average 1000 per year for repairs and upgrades, 1000 for riding gear and apparell, 1000 for a trailer, 2000 for gas, oil, hotels, insurance, and registrations. So he had a 17000 total over 4 years and 4500 miles. Average speed of 25 miles per hour, and you get $94.42 per hour. Not so far off from your rental experience. Is this a rich mans sport? I don't know how many of us are rich, but it does cost more than I care to add up.
